New ‘Right to rent’ law introduced

From 1st February 2016 landlords must check tenants have the right to rent or face £3000 fine.

The government has introduced a new law which starts on the 1st February 2016 where it is now the landlords responsibility to check if a tenant is legally allowed to live in the UK.

If it is later found that the tenant is an illegal immigrant then the landlord will be fined £3000.

The scheme has aready been rolled out in Birmingham, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley and Wolverhampton as from 1st December 2015.

The landlord must keep copies of documents such as passports and work visas to prove the checks have been performed.

If a tenant fails the right to rent check the landlord must report them to the home office.
