Nearly half of the UK property market’s homeowners have made large changes to their homes in the last year.
And according to research, bathrooms and kitchens remain the most popular renovations for owners to make, thanks to the wow factor they can add, and their ability to improve the value of the property.
According to the survey from GoCompare Home Insurance, 43 per cent of people who own properties in the UK, whether they are owner-occupiers or landlords, have changed something major in the last five years.
The results show that new bathrooms are the most common renovations, with 39 per cent of homeowners having had their bathrooms replaced. This was closely followed by the kitchen, which is popular for the same reasons, with 38 per cent of people having had a new kitchen being installed in the last half decade.
Making up the top three is central heating, with 34 per cent of homeowners having had their system updated in a big way in the last few years, whether that is having a new boiler or new radiators installed.
Other popular renovation projects across the UK in the past five years include a garden makeover or the installation of double glazing, both of which 26 per cent have opted for. Some 17 per cent chose to build extensions and solar panels were installed by 12 per cent.
Most of the changes that have been made to homes in the list of popular jobs are made because they not only improve the quality of life for residents, but also make them far more sellable and popular with tenants. Bathrooms and kitchens in particular can add massively to the value of property, thanks to their wow factor.
However, GoCompare said it’s important to remember the implications on your home insurance whenever you carry out such large jobs.
“When planning a major renovation project, one of the first things you should do is to review your buildings and contents insurance to make sure that you have adequate cover both during and after the work has been completed,” said Matt Sanders, the comparison firm’s home insurance spokesperson.
